Guitarist Launches 250-Performance Patriotic Quest at Historic Joe Becker Stadium

Christian rock frontman Robert Peterson aims to play 250 live electric guitar renditions of the national anthem by July 2027 to honor America's 250th anniversary.

JOPLIN, MO | JULY 25, 2026 | by Tracy Irwin

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, Christian rock artist Robert Peterson quietly launched a personal patriotic quest this weekend: to perform his electric guitar arrangement of the Star-Spangled Banner 250 times, live, by July 5, 2027.

The frontman for Robert Peterson and The Crusade chose a hot Saturday night at Joe Becker Stadium to kick off the journey. The crowd in attendance for the Joplin Jailbirds’ collegiate summer league baseball game was completely unaware of his mission, as not a word was spoken to the public address announcer.

Even the players were kept in the dark about the auspicious beginnings of Peterson’s silent quest. “What have we got here… a concert?” one player was overheard commenting before the performance.

But freedom rang. Peterson, who admitted to feeling some pre-performance nerves, found himself mostly distracted by the grueling 107-degree heat index. With sweat rolling down his cheeks and forearms, executing the anthem proved physically demanding.

Ultimately, fate prevailed. The sonic booms of his rock-infused rendition were greeted with enthusiastic applause from the nearly 200 fans in attendance.

Peterson’s arrangement remains deeply faithful to the anthem's foundation. “It has to,” he noted. “I never stray too far outside the lines. I’ve taken a few ‘power chord’ liberties on the outro that complete my version nicely. I’m always mindful of how it might be perceived, and I want to be respectful in my overall presentation.”

With his first stadium performance wrapped up in the July heat, Peterson has just one down—and 249 left to go.
